Grant Writing Workshop
Bison Horizon is sponsoring Grant Writing Workshop on May 21st at the Albert Bentley Building in Bison starting at 5:30 pm. Dr. Pat Johnson and Mindy Hubert of SDSU will walk participants through the steps of applying for grants, and will assist communities and individuals to develop the skills needed to successfully write and receive grants. There will be a $10.00 registration fee that will cover supper and materials. Free child care is available. To register for this workshop, call the Perkins County Extension Office at 605.244.5622 or email, carolyn.hendricks@sdstate.edu . Participants are asked to register by May 15th since space may be limited.

Financial Planning Workshop Held

Most of the Freshman class joined several members of the Bison community in attending the Horizons II personal finance workshop. After a meal sponsored by Horizons, Deb Rombough and Dan Oedekoven presented a wonderful program to help those in attendence find ways to both manage the money they have, and save for the future. Both students and adults had a multitude of ways to begin saving.
Plant Swap
Perkins County Master Gardeners will have a plant swap on May 20th from 2 to 6 pm in front of the Peck Feed Store in Bison. The Master Gardeners will have vegetables plants, house plants, and flowers available for purchase or swap. The public is welcome to bring plants to trade or sell. Proceeds from the plant sales will help to install the watering system in the Community Garden in Bison. SD Saves – Planning for Tomorrow, Today
SD Saves is a FREE workshop providing tools for saving and building wealth. It will be presented at the Albert Bentley Building in Bison on Thursday, May 7th from 5:30-8:00 p.m. A meal will be provided and free child care will be available upon request.
By participating in this workshop, you will learn valuable skills to help weather the ups and downs of today’s financial roller coaster. Topics covered will include: goal setting, budgeting, wealth building strategies, and the three golden rules of saving. Participants will also learn how to request a credit report.
SD Saves is open to everyone. Reserve your spot by May 4th by calling the Perkins County Extension Office at 605-244-5622 or email at Perkins.County@sdstate.edu. This workshop is offered through the NWAF Horizons project by the SDSU Cooperative Extension Service.
Perkins County Youth Ready for Garden Season

Perkins County youth under the direction of the Perkins County Master Gardener’s painted wooden garden stakes for the community garden. Each of the youth will have their own garden stake to mark the hill of pumpkins that they will plant under the watchful eye of the Master Gardener’s (MG) on May 14th in the Community Garden in Bison. As the weather warms and the plants begin to grow, MG will instruct the youth on the proper watering and weeding techniques on June 19th. To personalize their pumpkin the youth will carve their initials in their pumpkin on July 30th. Horizon Meeting Minutes
April 2, 2009
The April 2nd meeting of Horizons II, held at Main Street Bakery, was attended by Mary, Heidi, Lola, Carolyn, Dan and guest Sara Juergens.
Minutes were passed out and a treasures’ report was given.
Sara Juergens was at the meeting to explain her business plan for her new preschool in Bison. She was looking for help both financially and in grant writing or ideas for funding. Motion was made by Lola and seconded by Tonya to give Sara $2500 to help get her preschool up and running. The motion passed. She will research what she needs to purchase.
The personal finance workshop was planned for May 7th at 5:30 at the Bently Building. Food will be organized by the Afterschool program. Pre registration, due by May 1st, will be taken care of by the extension office. Childcare should be planned for at the Grand electric social room.
A grant writing workshop will be held May 21st 5:30 at the Bently Building. Pre registration will be due May 15. $10.00 charge for meals and materials.
A motion was made and passed to supply 2 $50 certificates to Post Prom. Certificates can be used at any Bison business.
The afterschool program was discussed. Carolyn will be leading a program on Robotics.
Next meeting is April 28th at the Bently Building. We will finalize plans for workshops.
