Bison, SD

I just wanted to take a minute to write about a new page I created.  It maybe can create a little more knowledge and awareness about the level of poverty in Bison.  This page shows us in graph format the occupations, education, income, marital status, racial diversity (or lack of) and ages in the Bison area compared to the entire state of South Dakota, and also to the United States.

It also includes a map of Bison.  This is an interesting page.  Please check out the page, it is listed on the right as “Bison’s Demographics”.

Bison area residents have been working fervently for some time now.  The results are starting to show.  Our big Celebration Event was a success!  The night was put together to share with community members, what the Bison Strategic Planning Committee has been up to.  Members of this committee were well diversified with young adults, as well as young and older parents and teachers that included:

The Horizons II has brought to us more of an understanding of the situation of run down buildings in Bison.  We no longer look at run-down buildings, and think that it is completely from a lack of care.  We have come to the realization that a lot of this is due to our economy and the situations that some of our citizens are in.  When there is an elderly person in town living on $500/month, that has to save to buy herself a new $15 remote control……it makes you think about it a little more.  We are looking into the “South Dakota Paint” project, setting up clean-up days, and coordinating local people with their resources to Clean up the town.  Let’s not dwell on the negative….let’s get busy and help them to clean up our town!  Check back with us to see how we are coming along.

The 2nd of 3 Strategic Planning committee meetings met at the Main Street Bakery on Tuesday, November 13th at 5:00.  We completed our Vision and Mission Statements.  We had a very diverse group working together on our Vision and Mission Statements.  We wrote this to show what we envision Bison to be in 2008.  We also wrote our goals.  All this after a wonderful meal that was, again, provided by Theo Larson.

On Saturday, October 27, at 5:30 p.m. HORIZONS will be joining the Bison Volunteer Firemen at the Bentley Building during their annual pancake supper.
